Roy
Perry presenting the "Save our Bus
Petition" to Cllr Ken Thornber - Leader HCC
Roy
Perry who represents Romsey Extra on HCC received the Petition
from the Save Our Bus Campaigners during the Council meeting on
22.11 handed over the petition to Ken Thornber- Leader of HCC
on Friday morning 23.11.07.
Roy
Perry who represents the Romsey Extra Division is a keen supporter
of the "Save our Bus" campaign
Roy
said "The rail bus link between Winchester and Romsey is
especially helpful to people in the rural area around Romsey.
In the town they may have the option of taking a train to Southampton-
but outside the town the rail link to Southampton is no use- it
is the bus link along the A3090 that really helps. Once you have
got your car out it is pointless to drive to Romsey or Parkway
so you will inevitably clog the roads and increase your carbon
footprint by heading directly to Winchester to take the train
there. I urge SouthWest Trains to think again on this one. This
Rail Bus Link really works and deserves to be kept going"
The
decision to shut the Winchester/Romsey rail-link will effectively
sever one of the main transportation arteries to romsey and there
are currently no plans to replace it, forcing existing passengers
to use their cars or alternative services, dramatically increasing
travel times, traffic pollution and congestion. South West Trains
and Hampshire County Council tried to conceal this decision in
an attempt to reduce opposition to their decision.
At
the recent Public Meeting, organised by the Save Our Bus Campaign,
South West Trains offered to fund 3 additional routes to the X66
Stagecoach service, in the mornings and evenings until the end
of July 2008 as an interim offer.
The
Save Our Bus Campaign is asking that ALL the rail-link bus services
between Romsey and Winchester are reinstated with immediate effect
so that during the stay of execution all parties can get a true
and accurate record of usage of the service and not a record of
a reduced service that has already axed some of the most popular
route times.
